Wildfires 2014 Recovery

After witnessing the destruction of multiple wildfires up close, it's clear San Diegans are going to need a streamlined process toward a full recovery. Some people will need to rebuild from the ground up; to them I want to send my heartfelt sympathies. Others may have had damage but need replacement of some items. I want to help both.

First of all, you should go to www.sdcountyrecovery.com and take a look at the Red Guide to Recovery as well as all the other information on both of the sites. It’s at the very least a starting point for how to begin rebuilding no matter your physical or emotional status.

Second, for people who may need to rebuild or make repairs to their homes in the unincorporated areas of the County as a result of the wildfires, I am proposing a waiver of plan check review and permit fees along with my colleague Dianne Jacob.

Finally, anyone who may have lost or have badly damaged vital records as a result of the wildfires may replace their marriage licenses, death and birth certificates for free.

Both the permit waiver and Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk fee waiver are items of legislation being proposed at the Board of Supervisor’s next regular meeting: Tuesday, May 20, 2014.

Continue to be safe and as we recover and rebuild, let us all take note of how we can be even better prepared as individuals and governments for the next big blaze. A very special thank you to all the fire fighters and law enforcement officials here in San Diego County and throughout the region who have bravely kept us safe. Your contributions have preserved so much.
