HONORING VETERANS DAY AND VETERANS AWARENESS WEEK

 

PROCLAMATION
Presented by Supervisor Bill Horn

WHEREAS, November 11, 2007 marks the 53rd observance of Veterans Day by our Nation to honor the memory of those warriors who did not return from service to our Nation and to acknowledge those who have returned and continue to make valuable contributions; and

WHEREAS, more than 260,000 veterans in San Diego County are held in the highest esteem by the citizens of our region, with the deepest gratitude for protecting our freedom and acknowledgment for the hardships endured by their families; and

WHEREAS, our veterans have carried their patriotism and concern for others beyond the battlefield; participating in local government, churches, community groups, charitable organizations, and volunteer service programs; and

WHEREAS, thousands of veterans will take part and be honored with a parade in San Diego on November 10 involving marching bands and JROTC units from local schools; and

WHEREAS, the parade’s 2007 theme is “Honoring Those Who Serve Veterans” with Congressman Duncan Hunter as the Grand Marshall; and as Honorary Grand Marshals the Veterans Administration Regional Office, Medical Center, Cemetery System, California Department of Veterans Affairs, County Veterans Service Office and Veterans Village of San Diego; and

WHEREAS, the San Diego United Veterans Association (SDUVA) is in charge of organizing and conducting the Veterans Day Parade for San Diego; and

WHEREAS, SDUVA members, including Waldo Joe Brunner, John Weaver, Allen Miliefsky, Jerry Cisinsky and Bea Waggett have served with distinction on the 2007 Veterans Day Parade Committee; and

WHEREAS, the County of San Diego is committed to recognizing and honoring the many fine individual veterans and veteran organizations devoted to providing health care for ill and disabled colleagues, giving direction to homeless veterans, and helping foster in young people a genuine love of country and sense of personal duty, honor, and civic responsibility; NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT PROCLAIMED by Chairman Ron Roberts and all members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on this 6th day of November, 2007 that they urge all citizens to celebrate Veterans Day, November 11, 2007 by flying the American flag and commend the veterans throughout San Diego County for outstanding service and commitment to our community; do hereby declare the week of November 5 through 11, 2007 to be “VETERANS WEEK” throughout the County of San Diego
