Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 41 Day

WHEREAS, on January 8, 2013, sailors assigned to the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 41 “Seahawks”, the Navy’s Fleet Replacement Squadron dedicated to training new pilots and aircrew, celebrated 170,000 operational flight hours without a Class A mishap, a milestone that few commands receive; and

WHEREAS, HSM-41 began service as the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light (HSL) 41 in 1983 and was the Navy’s first Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) MK III squadron flying the Sikorsky SH-60B helicopter; and

WHEREAS, HSL-41 produced great success due to the quality of initial and follow-on training, resulting in the squadron receiving the Meritorious Unit Commendation in 1985, 1988, 1991, and 2002; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, the squadron changed its name to the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 41 and currently works on the MH-60R helicopter, the newest aircraft in the U.S. Navy Fleet, which is an anti-ship, anti-submarine helicopter that elevates tactical maritime mission capability to a whole new level; and

WHEREAS, since its initiation in 1983, HSM-41 has trained over 3,000 fleet replacement pilots and aircrew for service in LAMPS MK III and MH-60R fleet squadrons; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Commanding Officer Clayton W. Michaels, HSM-41 places significant emphasis on safety and attention to detail, and identifies training as a top priority for the squadron’s success; and

WHEREAS, Commander Michaels has a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering and an extensive background in naval aviation, serving in a number of capacities and earning several commendations and awards throughout his career; and

WHEREAS, Commander Michaels continues to lead HSM-41 through its mission to train and produce the most competent, capable, and combat ready pilots, aircrewmen and maintainers to prepare them for the Fleet by training and developing tomorrow’s leaders through engaged leadership and proactive mentoring, and remembering every action affects the ability to achieve this mission; and

WHEREAS, the County of San Diego is committed to recognizing and honoring those who are dedicated to the best ideals of public service and achieve great success, and the sailors of the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 41 are such worthy citizens; NOW THEREFORE, 

BE IT PROCLAIMED by Chairman Greg Cox and all members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on this 7th day of May 2013, that they commend theHELICOPTER MARITIME STRIKE SQUADRON 41 for outstanding success, and in honor of achieving this milestone, do hereby declare this day to be “HELICOPTER MARITIME STRIKE SQUADRON 41 DAY” throughout San Diego County.
