SAN DIEGO – The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today approved a recommendation by Fifth District Supervisor Bill Horn to explore the feasibility of purchasing and implementing a free web site e-mail subscription service that would allow customers to receive specific information from County departments.

“This is a great way for people to select exactly what they want about county government, our services, department information, and the latest from individual districts,” said Supervisor Horn. “We take pride in having state-of-the-art online links to our customers, and this system builds upon that.”

A user would “opt in” and choose which alerts they would like to receive. Three examples:

  • A concerned citizen may want to be alerted when there is an outbreak of West Nile Virus
  • A commuter might like alerts from the Department of Public Works on temporary road closures
  • A resident might like to hear what happened at the weekly Board of Supervisor’s meeting.

Currently the County is undergoing a major redesign of its website. In addition to the new style and navigation of the website, an e-mail subscription service would allow the County to communicate more effectively with its customers.

E-mail subscription would allow residents to select specific information to be delivered to their home and/or business computer and then bring them back to the County website. The user-friendly free service would also have an option for the user to unsubscribe from one or all alerts at any time.
